The first storm, a winter wedding…and attempting perfection

The night before Kyla and Jeff’s wedding the snow began to fall softly and I smiled, knowing the ground would be covered in a blanket of snow that would finally cover the brown landscape we come to know as late fall in Saskatchewan.  I had everything ready to go, including a couple of rock star assistants (one of which affectionately calls me his wife).  I drifted off peacefully and slept soundly (something I am finding more and more difficult as things progress…but I will touch more on that a bit later)

The morning of…quite a different story.  The snow was still falling…with much intensity…and we knew we would be in for an interesting ride.  BUT rain or shine, or snowstorms…a photographer has one place to be…with his or her bride and groom.  When we arrived at the first location, we discovered Mr. and Mrs. “to be” had some interesting hiccups a few days before the wedding…including the morning of.  BUT Jeff had a calm and easy way about him, it was his wedding day…he was marrying his best friend…and nothing could change how perfect that was.

With the second location we found a house of busy ladies…EXCITED ladies…and my Kyla.  I call her my Kyla cause I love her to bits.  She was one of the first brides to contact me when I officially opened the doors to my business.  Right from the get go she was full of energy, kindness, beauty…and I instantly felt comfortable with her, like we had been friends for years.  Yet, with all the excitement and growing nerves, you could see it in her eyes…she too was marrying her soul mate and she couldn’t wait to start the rest of their lives together.

Okay, flash back a few nights…I had the most horrible nightmare!  I dreamed I woke up on Sunday morning and had completely missed their wedding day.  I was sick, panicking, crying…how could I let such an amazing couple down?  How could I do this to my Kyla and her amazing fiancé?  Well, to say the least I was pretty pumped when I woke up and figured out it was only a Photographers Nightmare.  Good grief, this sleeping thing is growing more and more difficult.  Like last night.  I went to bed late after working on the business side of things and found myself dreaming MORE terrible dreams of upsetting my Kyla.  I dreamed she hated every one of her images.  Again, sick, panicking, crying…woke up feeling like a ball of crap.  Why do I do this?  I don’t know…well I suppose I have an idea.  I am what one would call a perfectionist.  I found out during a training seminar I was involved in a couple years back, you can be COMPLETELY unorganized and scattered…and still be a perfectionist.  I am a people pleaser, want to make everyone happy and if it doesn’t happen…I feel broken.  Not the best and easiest thing to live with in life…but I think it’s pretty important in Photography.  Let me just say, in no way do I think I am a perfect photographer.  In no way do I think I ever will be, it’s a learning curve, a challenge, a battle with one’s self to improve.  There is ALWAYS room for improvement.  But, each and every time I attempt perfection and although I tend to love the images I give out…sometimes I am worried my clients will hate them.  Okay, I’m always worried, who am I kidding.

Anyway, in keeping with attempting perfection, couples plan their wedding days with as much detail and worry as a photographer plans their wedding day photography.  However, sometimes it just doesn’t work out the way it is planned.  Kyla and Jeff had some interesting twists to their plans, but like it always does, it all seemed to unfold and work out in the end.  Weddings.  Photography.  Life.  We all attempt a perfection we manifest in our own minds.  However, the world, God, the universe…whatever you will call it…has a way of changing things to make them their own.  Life would be pretty uneventful, bland…boring if we weren’t handed unexpected surprises and circumstances.  It’s just a matter of taking them, making them our own and calling them our own kind of perfect.

Kyla and Jeff, you are, in my opinion, the perfect couple.  You are kind, loving, caring.  You have so many friends who would do anything for you…and I don’t doubt for a second why.  Your day was perfect, it was your own and it was sooooo beautiful.  Thank you for allowing me to share in those moments.  Your wedding day, the planning, and your friendship.  I hope hope hope you love your images.  I still have a sick little butterfly floating around in my tummy after last night’s dream.  🙂  Again, thank you for everything!

Vegas and Tisdale…pretty much the same thing…

Another gorgeous fall day for a wedding…or a wedding party.  This couple took flight in September and said their vows in sin city.  Surrounded by their closest friends and family they made their vows to hold onto each other for the rest of their lives…finally…it was about time.  ;).  Fortunately for the rest of us we were able to celebrate with them at a later date.  It was a tad chilly, and the shoes we were rockin’…oh yes…even I sported hot pink heals…got a little uncomfortable to say the least.  BUT we were able to get some pretty awesome shots of this couple and their friends and family.  It’s obvious what means the most to these two in the world, their loved ones.  So, it was great to be able to get some shots of them with those who mean the most.  Congratulations you two!  I know your party in Tisdale was EQUALLY exciting as the one in Vegas…cause they’re pretty much the same thing.

A Soft and Dreamy Fall Wedding

This past October I had the privilage of shooting this gorgeous couple in Saskatoon.  The day started out cool, cloudy and calm.  It was the end of our warm summer (and fall) days but a beginning of something beautiful for this couple.  One thing I found absolutely amazing about their day is how we enter the church with clouds, and as the vows are being made, the sun broke through and bathed the church in light.  After a beautiful cerimony we went out to capture the couple, their family and their wedding party…and we were blessed with a gorgeous fall sunset.  The temperature was low but they held each other in their arms to keep each other warm and we got some amazing moments between the two of them to cherrish for the rest of their lives together.  Congratulations you two, your day was beautiful and I am so grateful to have shared it with you.

Hi! This is me!

My main objective in the next few months is to take my business to the next level.  My husband asked me how I was going to achieve that…I said “Better”.  Okay, not exactly a game plan.  BUT I do have a game plan, it’s going to be amazing and I absolutely can not wait!  Part of the game plan is to allow people to see more of me…rather than hiding behind my work.  When hiring a photographer, one looks at their portfolio…easy, yes I have one.  BUT a HUGE part about hiring a photographer is the photographer his or herself.  I am learning this as I go along and thankfully, for the most part, I have gone over well with most.  ha ha ha.  Anyway, as I go about re branding, red vamping, re everything with Vanessa Savage Photography I am going to be sharing more about myself, my life, my struggles…oh goodness me did I have a lot of those in my first year…and hopefully some triumphs along the way.  First goal…start a business and actually make enough money to live + make it worth my time spent away from my children, husband, family and friends…check.  Thankfully, I can say that is under the belt.  Next step… take the business and get to where my dreams are…it’s going to be a lot of HARD work, but I hope I have a feeling I’m on the right path.  So, to tie this up and stop rambling…Hi!  This is me!

How to top the last one…

Okay, so the title is how to top the last one…like I’m going to give you tips and advice on how to top last year.  Well quite honestly I have no idea.  One of my resolutions (which may very well drop off again once the busy season kicks into high gear again…since I’m really great at dropping things) is to blog more.  I know, I know, with social networks like facebook etc. blogs are becoming a thing of the past.  However, they are a way of allowing (those who give a flying rats butt) to know what’s going on in my photography world.  Sometimes when I’m late with emails or messages, forgetting to call people, and like I had mentioned before…dropping a pretty much every ball I have in my hand…I want to tell you all why.

My first year went…how I figured it would.  Well to a certain point.  It was rough.  ha ha ha.  Okay, let me clarify.  It was absolutely AMAZING!!!  Never in my wildest dreams did I think my DREAM would become a reality so quickly.  Never did I imagine I would have so much support, meet so many amazing people, do so many amazing things right off the starting line.  The part that was rough was…well the part that is always rough in any business.  Running a business!  I have this fantastic little business plan with all the information and my “guidelines” in place to help me get where I need to be.  However, telling this crazy mind of mine to follow those guide lines has been a struggle.  I am certainly not getting down on myself.  In fact, I am pretty darn proud of myself for getting through it all…with a few bumps and bruises along the way.

BUT I have a HUGE dream for Vanessa Savage Photography in 2012.  I will be restructuring my business plan and goals, refining my specialities…cause I am learning I just can’t do it all, and hopefully taking my little business to the next step.  I am energized (didn’t think that would ever happen again after this Christmas season…thank you all for the support and love), motivated, and ready to kick some serious behind.  (my own behind, because there is absolutely not point in trying to be better than anyone else in this world cause there will ALWAYS be someone better than you).  Anyway, I have blabbed and rambled enough about me.  although I promise you will be hearing a lot more about me (for those of you who give a flying rats butt) in this next year.  I will share more of my stumbles, my goals, my successes along the way in hopes you will be able to see more of the person behind the dream I am pushing into the universe.  Photography is all about what one sees through a lens.  Everyone sees it different, everyone IS different, thus the art created by each individual is unique (yay captain obvious!).  ha ha ha.  Anyway, what I’m trying to say is I would love for you to see who it is creating the images I slap on facebook or this blog, or my website that will hopefully make its way online in the next couple of weeks.  It’s important to me that you see why I create what I do, how I do it and what drives my creativity.  Hopefully (for those of you give a flying rats butt) you will enjoy it and see how hard I am working, how much I love this and why I do what I do.

AND for an image…my last weddin of 2011.  It was amazing, it was beautiful…it was one of those little signs I needed to show me I am on the right path.  Thank God I get a lot of those, he must know I need them.  😉

My Dream Wedding!!!

Yep, I titled this MY Dream Wedding…selfish…OH YES!  BUT I mean every bit of what I say.  I even told her “If I get married again you are going to be my wedding planner.”  Probably should have said if I renew my vows, since I’m not planning on marrying anyone else.  Anyway, I digress and will continue with gushing about this amazing day.

Honestly, from the photographers perspective…I never want to start out a day like this EVER again.  I am fairly certain I nearly gave my poor bride a heart attack.  I won’t get into details, but her amazing personality shone through with our phone conversation that morning.

Fast forward to the arrival.  I was completely and utterly floored by her details.  She had thought of every little thing and every little thing was completely perfect.  You could sense the comfort and the connection these two have by the way they floated around quickly, yet with purpose and ease.  Most brides I have met aren’t this calm, relaxed, just ready for their day.  Formal photos were before the ceremony so the groom and his boys arrived before to have the bride give the finishing touches on their hair.  (she is not only stunning and amazing with details, she is an extremely talented hair stylist!).  After everyone was primped, pinned and pretty we headed out for the day.  It was yet again, another day filled with perfection.  The temperature was cool and crisp but the sun shone beautifully and brightly all day.  It was just easy.  The whole day was comfortable, fun, simple, yet stunning…it reflected the two of them beautifully.

I would love to take this time to thank the two of you as well as your amazing family and friends for making us feel as though we were one of the “guys”.  tee hee…I’m so funny.  You two are a perfect pair, you’re love for each other and your gorgeous daughter is apparent in every move, every word and every breath you take.  Congratulations!

All The Right Moments

The morning started out perfectly.  The temperature was cool, the sky filled with beautiful clouds and the sun would peak out now and then to smile down on what would undoubtedly be a day filled with beautiful moments.  We arrived to meet Courtney and her bridesmaids and begin documenting one of the most important days of her life.  The day that would begin her forever with Preston.  Courtney is a planner, she had everything laid out perfectly, the morning went smoothly and we were able to travel to meet Preston and his crew in the hour before they said their vows.

On the drive to Preston’s location, the sky began to open up and showers could be seen across the wide open country side.  Thick black heavy clouds dumped their cargo in pockets and we drove through the rain that would get this photographer a little stressed…to say the least.

Despite the rain, Preston was clearly excited and filled with anticipation while surrounded by his boys.  You could see in his eyes, the weather played no part in his day.  He was about to marry his best friend…his soul mate.

The day went without a hitch.  We drove through pouring rain but, in all the right moments, the sun poured it’s light and warmth over this beautiful couple as if to embrace them and reaffirm their decision to spend the rest of their lives together.  Their whole day was filled with moments.  All the right moments.  It was beautiful.  It was perfect and you could just feel it was meant to be.

Congratulations you two.  You make a beautiful couple both inside and out.  Your family is FANTASTIC and we felt at home with you both.  Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your special day!
